The history of FerroTec chiller: 30 years of focus on the thermoelectric refrigeration market

Since its establishment in 1992,FerroTec has always focused on thermoelectric refrigeration technology and has been deeply engaged in the fields of semiconductors and precision temperature control. As a wholly-owned subsidiary of Japan's FerroTec Group in China, FerroTec has gradually grown into a leading enterprise in the domestic chiller industry by relying on its global technical resources.

 

TEC technology foundation period (1992-2000) 

In the early stages of the company's development, the team focused on the research and development and manufacturing of thermoelectric cooling materials and devices, accumulated rich technical experience, and provided a solid technical reserve for the subsequent independent research and development of chillers.

We introduced the thermoelectric cooling production line in 1992, becoming one of the earliest companies in China to enter the thermoelectric cooling field. In the early stages of development, our thermoelectric cooling products were mainly used in scenarios such as computer cooling and laboratory equipment.

In 1995, FerroTec Group established another subsidiary in China: Shanghai Shenhe Thermomagnetic Electronics Co., Ltd., which further promoted the research and development of thermoelectric materials.

 

TEC technology expansion period (2001-2010)

After entering the 21st century, FerroTec expanded thermoelectric cooling technology to the field of industrial refrigeration and successfully developed high-efficiency temperature control modules designed specifically for semiconductor equipment and medical devices.

In 2001, FerroTec transformed into a divisional system, and the "TE Manufacturing Section" was changed to the "TE Division". In the same year, the company introduced the advanced MINI cooling assembly line, and the thermoelectric business expanded and entered a period of rapid growth.

 

In 2010, Micro TEC entered the consumer electronics market and optical communications field on a large scale, and the company's market share in the thermoelectric cooling field was further expanded.

 

Chiller R&D and production (2011-2020)

With the rapid development of various industries such as semiconductors, medical treatment, testing, and lasers, the market demand for high-precision temperature control is growing rapidly. FerroTec Thermoelectric Business established a chiller team in 2020 and officially started independent research and development and production of chillers.

 

In 2017, we established Zhejiang Pioneer Thermal Power Co., Ltd. in Changshan, expanded a new factory of 50,000 square meters, and started mass production of consumer-grade thermoelectric cooling products.

 

In 2020, we established a chiller R&D team and officially launched the terminal product line: focusing on the research and development of high-precision temperature control products such as chillers. In the same year, the company established a provincial technical center laboratory to provide comprehensive R&D support for the performance optimization of chillers (such as energy efficiency ratio and temperature control accuracy).

 

Intelligentization and scalability stage (2021 to present)

In the past five years, FerroTec chiller R&D team has expanded from the original 10 people to more than 60 people. The rich range of chillers and customized services can meet the precision temperature control needs .

In 2024, we achieved a major breakthrough in chiller temperature control technology:

  1. We have obtained a patent for the wireless control TEC system. This technology can realize remote monitoring and intelligent adjustment of temperature data, providing strong technical support for the precise temperature control of subsequent chillers.
  2. Obtained a patent entitled "A test and control method and system for measuring cooling capacity using heating load". This technology can significantly improve the test accuracy of the chiller through real-time monitoring and intelligent control of load power. The acquisition of this patent also marks an important progress for the company in the direction of intelligent refrigeration technology.

 

In 2025, FerroTec Chiller team successfully developed and manufactured a high-precision temperature-controlled TEC chiller with a temperature control accuracy of ±0.02°C. The chiller has obtained the first equipment certification in Zhejiang Province and has been put into mass use in the field of glue coating and development, achieving a milestone breakthrough in the field of high-end temperature control equipment.  In addition, the company has also obtained a patent for the surface treatment of bismuth telluride (Bi₂Te₃): this technology solves the performance degradation problem of traditional TEC devices caused by material oxidation, can significantly improve the stability and energy efficiency of thermoelectric materials, increase the cooling efficiency of the chiller by more than 15% and extend its service life.

 

In the past nearly 30 years (1992-2025) of development, FerroTec has achieved major breakthroughs in thermoelectric cooling technology and successfully promoted the industrialization of various TEC temperature control products such as chillers . In the future, we will continue to improve the chiller manufacturing process, enhance temperature control accuracy and performance, and provide more accurate, efficient and reliable temperature control solutions for customers in various industries.
